Paper & Pulp Mills

  • Georgia-Pacific is spending ~$150M to rebuild the 1980-vintage No. 4 paper machine at its Palatka, Fla. mill (Angel Soft bath tissue), keeping existing output and adding capacity with upgraded technology and safety systems; work is under way with completion expected Q2 2028 (PULPAPERnews, PaperAge)
  • Fibre Excellence's Saint-Gaudens pulp mill in France faces a liquidation threat after sister mill Tarascon was liquidated; prospective investors missed a key deadline for their planned takeover, though EUWID says the project may still succeed (EUWID)
  • Klabin's Q3 adjusted EBITDA fell 12% to R$1.86B (33% margin) on net revenue of R$5.57B (+3%) and net income of R$393M (–18%); a 5.7% stronger real and a 12% rise in cash cost/t to R$3,483 outweighed an 18% jump in dollar short-fibre prices, with sales volumes flat at ~1.06M t and net debt/EBITDA at 3.3x (Brazil Stock Guide)
  • Stora Enso restarted PM 4 (400,000 t/yr newsprint) at Langerbrugge, Belgium on Oct. 23 after a fire on Oct. 16 halted the mill for about a week (EUWID)

  • Update: Washington L&I fined Nippon Dynawave $77,800 over a March incident at Longview in which a worker waded through ~145°F spilled pulp and fell into a four-foot hole it had melted in the asphalt — two months before the May 26 tank failure; citations cover failure to protect workers from hot material and omission of the pulp system from the hazardous-piping program, and the tank-failure investigation continues (KPTV)

Forestry & Timber

  • Weyerhaeuser's Q3 adjusted EBITDA rose 14% to $248M on net sales of $1.86B (net earnings $61M); Wood Products EBITDA jumped to $91M from $8M, Timberlands slipped to $133M, and the company agreed to sell ~81,000 acres of non-core Arkansas timberland for $146M (closing Q4), broke ground on its first biocarbon plant in McComb, Miss., and signed a 145,000-acre geothermal exploration deal in Oregon/Washington; Q4 EBITDA is guided roughly flat with Wood Products moderately lower (Weyerhaeuser 8-K)
  • Sveaskog's Q3 operating profit fell 37% to SEK 242M as timber prices from its own forest dropped 16%, even as sawlog deliveries rose 4%; it expects lower log prices to improve sawmill conditions "with some delay" (Fordaq, Lesprom)
  • The 74th International Softwood Conference in Dublin (record ~300 delegates) heard that EOS-country softwood output is projected to fall another 4% this year on sharp declines in Germany and Sweden, exports are dropping faster, autumn lumber prices fell again and "this difficult situation is expected to persist for several more quarters" (Fordaq)
