Canada launches Forest Sector Action Plan built on four priority pillars Building on this week's project funding announcements, Minister Tim Hodgson unveiled a Forest Sector Action Plan organized around securing competitive wood fibre supply, driving innovation and modernization investment, expanding domestic and international markets, and supporting workers through skills and transition programs. Informed by the Canadian Forest Sector Transformation Task Force's recommendations, the plan is to be developed into a formal Forest Sector Strategy by the end of 2026 in collaboration with provinces and territories, which own 88% of Canada's forests. Northern Ontario wildfire doubles overnight to nearly 3,000 hectares, forcing First Nation evacuation The uncontrolled Timmins 9 fire near Gogama, burning west of Highway 144 since May 31, doubled in size overnight to roughly 2,945 hectares, prompting a mandatory evacuation of Mattagami First Nation and the closure of Highway 144 between Highways 101 and 560. Nine FireRanger crews and aerial suppression teams are working the fire, and the Ministry of Natural Resources has issued an emergency area order restricting road access. Worker killed in machinery accident at Alabama lumber mill A worker died Wednesday night in a machinery accident at W G Sullivan Lumber Co. on Highway 171 east of Samantha in north Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.
